LifterLMS With WooCommerce: When to Use It and How It Changes Checkout
The LifterLMS WooCommerce add-on replaces the native checkout with the WooCommerce cart. See when that trade is worth making, what changes for…
Read articleLifterLMS covers a lot by itself. Courses, quizzes, memberships, certificates, checkout and student accounts all live in one plugin. A course business still needs tools around it: a payment processor, an email platform, a place for learners to talk, somewhere to host video, and a way to see what is working.
This article groups the integrations by the job they do. For each one we note how it connects, because that decides who maintains it and who you call when it breaks.
Everything named here was checked against the vendor's own site or the LifterLMS documentation in October 2026. Add-on line-ups and bundles change, so confirm on the vendor's pages before you buy.
| Job | Start with | How it connects |
|---|---|---|
| Take card payments | Stripe, PayPal or Authorize.Net | Official add-on |
| Sell physical products too, or calculate tax | WooCommerce | Official add-on |
| Email marketing | Mailchimp or Kit | Official add-on |
| CRM and tag-based automation | WP Fusion, FluentCRM, Groundhogg | Third-party plugin |
| Connect other apps | Zapier, Uncanny Automator, webhooks | API or third-party plugin |
| Discussion and community | bbPress, BuddyPress, Social Learning | Core integration or official add-on |
| Forms | Gravity Forms, WPForms, Ninja Forms, Formidable Forms | Official add-on |
| Video | Vimeo, Wistia, YouTube and similar | Embed, plus optional add-on |
| Analytics | Built-in reporting, MonsterInsights, Analytify | Core or third-party plugin |
The free core plugin includes a manual payment gateway for offline payments such as bank transfers and invoices. The order waits until an admin records the payment. To charge cards automatically you need a paid add-on. The LifterLMS list of supported payment gateways has three, plus the WooCommerce route described below.
The LifterLMS WooCommerce add-on hands checkout to WooCommerce. You point an access plan at a WooCommerce product, and a completed order enrolls the customer. That opens up WooCommerce's gateways and its tax settings. LifterLMS has no native tax settings, and its documentation points to WooCommerce for this.
There are trade-offs. You maintain two systems, recurring billing needs the separate WooCommerce Subscriptions extension, and you cannot run the native LifterLMS checkout and the WooCommerce checkout side by side. Choose it when you also sell physical goods, need tax calculated at checkout, or need a gateway LifterLMS does not offer. Our tutorial on selling courses with LifterLMS covers the native route step by step.
There are two official email add-ons: Mailchimp and Kit (formerly ConvertKit). The Mailchimp add-on adds students to an audience when they register or enroll and can assign interest groups per course or membership. The Kit add-on adds students to tags and sequences when they register or enroll, and can send purchase data to Kit. Both put a consent checkbox on your forms and respect it.
For other platforms, the LifterLMS CRM documentation recommends WP Fusion, a third-party plugin that links WordPress to many CRMs. The WP Fusion integration for LifterLMS applies tags on enrollment and completion, and can enroll or unenroll a student when a tag is added or removed. If you would rather keep the CRM inside WordPress, FluentCRM lists a built-in LifterLMS integration and Groundhogg sells a LifterLMS extension.
Decide early which system is the source of truth for access. If a CRM tag controls enrollment, one careless automation can remove paying students from their course.
LifterLMS includes a REST API. You create API keys under LifterLMS > Settings > REST API, and requests go to /wp-json/llms/v1. It covers courses, sections, lessons, memberships, access plans, students, enrollments and progress, and recent releases added endpoints for quizzes, orders and certificates.
Webhooks work in the other direction. You pick a topic such as student created, enrollment created, order updated or progress updated, give a delivery URL and a secret key, and LifterLMS posts the data when the event happens.
Our rule: connectors are fine for low-volume, low-stakes flows such as a chat notification or a spreadsheet row. For anything that grants access or touches money, prefer a direct connection you can log and monitor.
LifterLMS works with standard WordPress themes and the block editor, and its blocks ship with the core plugin. LifterLMS also documents working with Elementor and Beaver Builder for course and lesson layouts. With Elementor you enable courses and lessons as editable post types and use LifterLMS widgets such as the pricing table and syllabus. Elementor Pro is only needed for reusable Theme Builder templates. LifterLMS also sells its own theme, Sky Pilot, and a page builder, Aircraft.
A page builder controls the layout of the content area. The syllabus, pricing table and progress still come from LifterLMS, as blocks or widgets you place. Deeper layout changes belong in a child theme or template overrides, as described in how to customize LifterLMS without breaking updates.
Do not serve course video from your web server. LifterLMS embeds video by URL, and its video hosting documentation suggests Vimeo, Wistia, YouTube, GoDAM, Vidalytics and VdoCipher. Bunny.net works through Presto Player, a third-party player plugin that lists LifterLMS support. The official Advanced Videos add-on can require a learner to finish a video before completing the lesson, resume playback and auto-advance. It works with Vimeo, Wistia, YouTube and GoDAM.
LifterLMS > Reporting covers students, courses, enrollments and sales. It will not tell you which ad or article produced a sale. For that you need a marketing analytics tool such as Google Analytics with e-commerce tracking. MonsterInsights lists LifterLMS among the platforms its eCommerce addon supports, and Analytify offers a LifterLMS add-on.
A custom integration is usually a small plugin built on LifterLMS hooks, the REST API and webhooks, the parts of the plugin that are meant to be built on. We cover the decision in when to build a custom LifterLMS plugin.
List jobs, not tools. For each job, check for an official add-on first, then a reputable third-party plugin, then the API. Start with payments and email, and add the rest when a real need appears. Every plugin you install is one more thing to update and test.
If you need LifterLMS connected to a system that is not on this list, or an existing connection keeps failing, our LifterLMS integrations service covers both. Tell us what you need to connect and we will tell you whether an off-the-shelf option will do.
