LifterLMS for Schools and Tutoring: Classes, Parents and Grades

Tutoring businesses, online academies, language schools and small private schools often look at LifterLMS for schools because it runs on their own WordPress site, has no per-student fees in the core plugin, and can take payments for classes directly. Those are real advantages. LifterLMS is not, however, a student information system, and schools have needs that a course-selling platform was not designed around: parents, terms, report cards and children's data.

This article is for school owners, tutoring companies and the developers who build their sites. It covers how to model classes and terms, the options for parent access, how grading works, and the privacy questions to settle first, with a clear line between what core LifterLMS does, what add-ons do, and what needs custom work.

Where LifterLMS fits in a school

LifterLMS works best as the online teaching layer: lessons, materials, quizzes, assignments, progress and certificates. It fits well for:

  • Tutoring companies selling subject courses or monthly programs to families.
  • Online academies and homeschool programs delivering a full curriculum online.
  • Schools adding online classes such as summer school, revision courses or enrichment programs.
  • Exam preparation with practice quizzes and timed tests.

It is a weaker fit as the system of record for a whole school: timetables, attendance registers, behaviour records, admissions and statutory reporting belong in a dedicated school management system. LifterLMS can sit alongside one, but it should not try to replace it.

Modelling classes, terms and teachers

LifterLMS has courses, not classes, so decide early how the two map.

One course per class per term

The most common model is a course for each class and term, for example "Year 9 Maths, Autumn". Course settings give you the controls a term needs:

  • Enable Course Time Period with a Course Start Date and Course End Date opens and closes the content for everyone.
  • Enable Enrollment Period limits when families can sign up.
  • Enable Course Capacity caps class size, with a Capacity Reached Message when it is full.
  • Drip settings release lessons weekly, matching the teaching schedule.

Use the clone feature to copy last term's course as a starting point.

Cohorts for intakes

If the same course runs with several intakes, the paid Course Cohorts add-on is designed for groups of students who enroll and progress through a course together, such as a semester. Our article on cohort-based courses compares it with the one-course-per-term approach.

Teachers and assistants

LifterLMS includes Instructor and Instructor's Assistant roles. Assign teachers to their courses in the course's Instructors settings, and they work only with those courses. An LMS Manager can run the whole LMS without full site administration.

Enrolling students

Schools rarely want students to self-enroll. Administrators can add students to a course from its Students tab, bulk-enroll from the WordPress Users screen, or issue voucher codes that a family redeems to join the right class. By default the Instructor and Instructor's Assistant roles cannot enroll or unenroll students themselves, so decide whether enrollment sits with the office or whether teachers need an LMS Manager account or a custom permission change.

Parent access: the honest answer

This is the question schools ask most. Core LifterLMS has no parent or guardian role, and no built-in way to link a parent account to a child's account so the parent can view progress.

The workable options are:

ApproachHow it worksBest for
Parent owns the accountThe parent registers and the child learns under that account. Emails and progress go to the parentYoung children, one child per family
Groups add-on as a family groupThe parent buys seats and acts as group leader for their children, using the add-on's front-end progress reportingFamilies with several children; tutoring centres reporting to schools
Email reportsEngagement emails and custom summaries sent to a parent email stored on the student's profileSimple progress updates without a parent login
Custom parent dashboardA developer links parent and child accounts and builds a page showing each child's courses, grades and recent activitySchools where parent visibility is a core promise

The Groups add-on was built for organisations buying seats, not for families, so test the family workflow before committing to it. If parents are central to your service, budget for a custom parent view. It is a well-defined project because LifterLMS exposes student progress and grades through PHP functions and the REST API.

Grading and feedback

Core LifterLMS grades automatically and keeps a running grade for each student.

  • Quizzes score multiple choice, picture choice and true or false questions, with a Passing Percentage, attempt limits and time limits.
  • Course grades average lesson grades, weighted by each lesson's weight, so a final test can count for more than weekly checks.
  • Students see their grades in the My Grades area of the student dashboard.
  • Teachers see results in LifterLMS reporting and can leave review remarks on each quiz answer.

Written work needs add-ons. Advanced Quizzes adds question types such as short and long answer that a teacher grades by hand, and Assignments adds tasks, essays and file uploads attached to lessons. See student grades and the gradebook.

There is no report card in core. The PDFs add-on can export grade and progress reports as PDF files. A formatted end-of-term report with teacher comments, attendance and effort grades is custom work.

Privacy and safeguarding with child learners

Settle these decisions before the first student registers, because changing them later means contacting every family.

Know which rules apply

Rules on children's data depend on where you and your students are. In the United States, COPPA applies to sites directed at children under 13; the FTC's COPPA frequently asked questions explain the obligations, including parental consent. In the UK and EU, data protection law and age-appropriate design expectations apply. Take advice for your situation; this article is not legal advice.

Collect less

LifterLMS registration and checkout forms are editable. Remove fields you do not need, such as full address or phone number for a child account. Use usernames that do not reveal full names when students might see each other's names in comments or reviews. Our guide to registration and account forms shows how to edit them.

Close the site to the public

  • Turn off Open Registration so only students you enroll can create accounts.
  • Restrict site by membership level limits the whole site to members of a chosen membership.
  • Protect lesson files with LifterLMS media protection, so a shared link to a worksheet does not work for someone outside the class.
  • Disable lesson comments and course reviews, or moderate them, if students should not interact publicly.

Handle data requests

LifterLMS connects to WordPress's personal data export and erasure tools. Under LifterLMS > Settings > Accounts, the Account Erasure Requests options decide whether Remove Order Data and Remove Student LMS Data are deleted when an erasure request is processed. Set them according to your retention policy. More in LifterLMS, GDPR and privacy.

Taking payments for classes

For tutoring businesses, LifterLMS checkout handles the money side: a recurring monthly plan for ongoing tuition, a one-time fee per term, a payment plan for an annual program, and coupons for sibling discounts. Families can manage their orders from the student dashboard. Schools invoicing outside the site can use free or hidden access plans and enroll students manually.

What needs custom work

  • Parent and guardian accounts linked to children.
  • Attendance for live lessons, and timetables.
  • Report cards in your school's format.
  • Integration with a school management system to sync classes and rosters.
  • Single sign-on with school Google or Microsoft accounts, which comes from a WordPress SSO plugin plus mapping work.

Frequently asked questions

Can teachers only see their own classes?

Yes. Users with the Instructor role work with the courses they are assigned to, and their reporting is limited to those courses.

Can parents log in and see their child's progress?

Not in core. Use a parent-owned account, a family group with the Groups add-on, or a custom parent dashboard.

Is LifterLMS suitable for children under 13?

It can be used, but you are responsible for consent and data handling. Collect minimal data, close the site to the public and follow the law that applies to you.

Can students submit homework?

Yes, with the Assignments add-on, which adds file uploads and written tasks attached to lessons.

What to do next

Map one real class onto LifterLMS on a staging site: a term course with dates, a teacher, five students and a quiz. Then show it to a teacher and a parent and note what they ask for. Their questions will tell you which of the custom items above you need.

Our LifterLMS consulting service plans school and tutoring setups, including parent access and privacy, and LifterLMS development builds the custom pieces. Tell us about your school.
