LifterLMS for Coaches: Building a Coaching Program That Scales

How coaches and consultants use LifterLMS to combine a signature course, a paid membership, private one-to-one content and live calls, what the free core handles, which add-ons fill the gaps and where custom work is needed.

Most coaches reach the same ceiling. Every client gets the same explanations, the same worksheets and the same first three sessions, and your calendar fills before your income does. Moving the repeatable parts into a course and keeping your time for the parts only you can do is the standard way through that ceiling. LifterLMS for coaches is a good fit for that model because it runs on your own WordPress site and lets you sell courses, memberships and private client access side by side.

This article is for coaches, consultants and trainers planning a program, and for the people who build sites for them. It shows how to map a coaching offer onto LifterLMS: which parts the free core plugin covers, which add-ons you would need, and where a developer earns their fee.

The three layers of a coaching program

Almost every successful coaching program combines three layers. Plan them separately, because each uses different LifterLMS features.

  1. Self-paced teaching. Your framework, delivered as a course: videos, worksheets, exercises and quizzes. Students can work through it without you.
  2. Group access. A membership or cohort that gives ongoing material, a library of call recordings and a place to ask questions.
  3. One-to-one work. Private sessions, personalised feedback and documents for individual clients.

Many coaches sell these as tiers: the course alone, the course plus group coaching, and a premium tier with private sessions. LifterLMS can sell all three from one site.

What LifterLMS core gives a coaching business

The free core plugin covers the first two layers well.

  • Courses with structure. Sections, lessons, prerequisites and drip schedules let you release a program week by week instead of all at once.
  • Memberships. A membership can auto-enroll members into courses and restrict ordinary pages and posts. On any page, the Membership Access box limits it to members of the memberships you choose. Our guide to memberships and access plans covers the setup.
  • Flexible pricing. Access plans support one-time and recurring payments, payment plans, trials and sale prices, and access that expires after a period or on a date. High-ticket programs often need payment plans, which we cover in payment plans and free trials.
  • Quizzes and reflection. Quizzes check understanding. A zero-point question works as an unscored self-assessment.
  • Automated encouragement. Engagements send emails, achievements and certificates when students reach milestones.
  • Content inside pages. The [lifterlms_hide_content] shortcode shows a block of content only to people enrolled in a given course or membership, for example a booking link for members only:
[lifterlms_hide_content id="123" message="Book your call once you have joined the program."]
Book your next group call here: ...
[/lifterlms_hide_content]

Replace 123 with your membership or course ID.

Selling private client packages with hidden plans

Coaches often agree a custom package on a sales call and then need a way for the client to pay and get access. LifterLMS handles this well without extra plugins.

  1. Create a course or membership for the package, for example "Leadership Intensive, 1:1".
  2. Add an access plan with the agreed price and billing, and set its visibility to Hidden. Hidden plans do not appear in the public pricing table.
  3. Copy the plan's Direct to Checkout Purchase Link and send it to the client after the call.
  4. Use the plan's Checkout Redirect to send the client to an onboarding page after payment.

The access plan dialog also offers a Hidden Access plan type, described as "Grant free access without making this plan publicly available". It suits clients who pay by invoice outside the site.

One-to-one content with Private Areas

Core LifterLMS gives every student the same course content. It has no built-in space for material meant for one client only. That is the gap the paid LifterLMS Private Areas add-on fills.

According to its product page, Private Areas gives each student a private space for one-to-one coaching, personalised content and recorded call replays. You can create private posts for one learner or several, trigger private posts from LMS activity such as passing a quiz or finishing a course, hold private discussions around that content, and notify learners when something new is posted. It also supports selling private coaching as an add-on to a course or membership.

Typical uses:

  • A replay of each client's session, posted to their private area with notes and next actions.
  • Personalised feedback on a submitted plan or exercise.
  • An intake questionnaire and a tailored roadmap at the start of an engagement.

If you only coach a handful of private clients, a shared document service may be enough. Private Areas earns its place when you have dozens of clients and want everything in one login.

Live calls and group sessions

LifterLMS is not a video conferencing tool and does not schedule appointments in core. The usual pattern combines three pieces:

NeedTypical toolHow it connects to LifterLMS
Group calls on a scheduleZoom or a similar servicePost the join link in a members-only lesson or page, or use the LifterLMS Events add-on, which supports virtual events attached to courses, lessons and memberships
One-to-one bookingA scheduling tool such as Calendly, or a WordPress booking pluginEmbed the booking page in content restricted to clients who have paid
RecordingsYour video hostAdd each recording as a lesson in a "Call library" course, or to a client's private area

The LifterLMS Events add-on lists live, virtual and in-person events, a Zoom location option, calendar subscription and a My Events dashboard for students. For other options, see running live classes with Zoom and LifterLMS.

Consultants selling to companies

Consultants often sell the same program to an organisation rather than to individuals. Two routes work:

  • Vouchers in core: generate a batch of codes, give them to the client, and each employee redeems one to enroll. Simple and free.
  • The Groups add-on: the company buys seats, a group leader invites their people and sees their progress on the front end. It suits ongoing corporate clients who want reporting. Our guide to LifterLMS Groups and team training covers it in depth.

Example program setups

ProgramLifterLMS setup
Signature course onlyOne course, one or two public access plans, drip by week, engagement emails
Course plus group coachingA membership that auto-enrolls into the course, a recurring plan, a call library course, members-only call links
Premium one-to-oneA hidden plan with a payment plan, Private Areas for session notes and replays, a restricted booking page
Corporate programThe same course sold through vouchers or Groups seats, with a certificate on completion

Limits and where custom work comes in

Be clear about what is not included:

  • No built-in scheduling or video calls. You will connect a booking tool and a conferencing service.
  • No client CRM. LifterLMS records enrollments and progress, not sales pipelines or session notes for your own use. Many coaches connect a CRM through an integration.
  • Booking linked to payment. "Buy a package of six sessions and track how many are left" is not a setting. It needs a booking plugin that handles credits, or custom development.
  • Automations across tools. Moving a client from "paid" to "booked" to "onboarded" across your CRM, email platform and LifterLMS is usually an integration project.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use LifterLMS just for one-to-one coaching clients?

Yes. Hidden access plans let you sell custom packages privately, and the Private Areas add-on gives each client their own content. The course features remain available when you later turn your method into a program.

Do I need a membership or a course?

Use a course for a structured program with a start and finish. Use a membership for ongoing access to a library, calls and several courses. Many coaches sell a membership that includes a course.

Can clients pay in instalments?

Yes. Access plans support payment plans with a set number of payments, once a payment gateway add-on that supports recurring billing is active.

Can LifterLMS host my coaching community?

Core includes lesson comments and course reviews, not a full community. For forums and member profiles you would add a community plugin such as bbPress or BuddyBoss.

Next steps

Write your program as the three layers above, decide which layer each paid tier includes, then build the self-paced course first. It is the part that buys back your time, and the rest can be added around it.

If you want the whole system set up properly, including pricing tiers, private client areas, booking and CRM integration, our LifterLMS development service builds coaching sites end to end, and LifterLMS consulting can help you plan the offer first. Tell us how you coach today.
