The Real LifterLMS Cost: Hosting, Add-ons, Development and Upkeep

The LifterLMS core plugin is free, so the honest answer to "what does LifterLMS cost?" is: whatever the rest of the site costs. That rest includes add-on licences, hosting that can handle logged-in students, a theme, other plugins, third-party services such as video hosting and email delivery, the development work to set it all up, and the maintenance that keeps it running. This article puts a line against each of those so you can budget the real LifterLMS cost before you commit.

It is for business owners comparing LifterLMS with hosted platforms, and for teams writing a budget or a business case. We use LifterLMS's own published prices where they exist, at the time of writing, and describe everything else as categories with the factors that drive them, because hosting, services and development vary too much for a single number to be honest.

If you are still deciding between the free plugin and paid bundles, read LifterLMS free vs paid alongside this.

LifterLMS licences and add-ons

The core plugin, which includes courses, memberships, quizzes, certificates, engagements, reporting, the REST API and a manual payment gateway, costs nothing. Most selling sites need at least a payment gateway add-on such as Stripe or PayPal, which is paid.

At the time of writing, the LifterLMS pricing page lists three bundles:

  • Earth Bundle for one site: the ecommerce add-ons (Stripe, PayPal, WooCommerce), Cart Abandonment Recovery and Name Your Price.
  • Universe Bundle for up to five sites: adds the Sky Pilot theme, email marketing and CRM add-ons and form integrations.
  • Infinity Bundle for unlimited sites: adds the advanced add-ons, such as Groups, Advanced Quizzes, Assignments and Course Cohorts.

Individual add-ons are also sold on their own. Three details affect the long-term budget:

  • Renewals are at full price. The pricing page advertises first-year discounts; budget year two and beyond at the full list price.
  • Lapsed licences keep working. According to the same page, the site and add-ons keep functioning if you do not renew, but add-on updates, security upgrades and support stop. In practice you should renew anything you run in production.
  • Bundle maths. Two or three individual add-ons often cost about as much as a bundle that includes them. Price your actual list both ways.

Hosting: the line most people underbudget

A brochure site serves cached pages to anonymous visitors. An LMS serves personalised pages to logged-in students: progress bars, quiz attempts, the Student Dashboard. Those pages cannot be served from a simple page cache, so the server does real work for every learner click.

What actually drives hosting cost:

  • Concurrent active learners, not total students. 5,000 enrolled students who log in occasionally need less than 300 doing a timed exam at 9am on a Monday.
  • PHP workers and database performance. Managed WordPress plans differ mainly here.
  • Persistent object caching such as Redis, which LifterLMS supports and which helps logged-in performance.
  • Storage and bandwidth for downloads. Video should not be on your web host at all.
  • Support quality. When checkout breaks during a launch, response time is worth money.

Make sure the host meets current WordPress hosting requirements and offers staging. Cheap shared hosting is the most common false economy we see on LMS sites; our guide on speeding up a LifterLMS site explains why.

Themes, plugins and services

Theme and design

A free block theme can look excellent with LifterLMS. A premium theme or page builder adds a yearly licence and, more importantly, design time. See the best themes for LifterLMS.

Supporting plugins

Most course sites end up with paid licences for some of: a forms plugin, an SEO plugin, a backup plugin or service, security monitoring, an SMTP or email delivery plugin, and connectors to marketing tools. Each is modest on its own; together they are a real yearly line.

Third-party services

  • Video hosting. Usually the largest service cost for video-heavy courses. Plans scale with storage, bandwidth or plays. See video hosting for LifterLMS.
  • Transactional email delivery. Enrollment, receipt and password emails must reach inboxes. A delivery service is cheap and essential.
  • Email marketing or CRM. Often already in your budget; check whether the plan scales with contacts.
  • Live sessions. A Zoom or webinar subscription if you teach live.

Payment processing

LifterLMS adds no transaction fee of its own. Your gateway charges its standard processing fees per payment, and international cards, currency conversion and disputes cost more. Check your gateway's pricing page for your country.

Setup, development and customization

This line varies the most, so split it into three kinds of work:

  1. Configuration. Installing, setting up pages, gateways, emails, access plans and a theme. A capable owner can do this; an agency does it faster and with fewer gaps.
  2. Design and build. Sales pages, catalog, dashboard styling, course templates.
  3. Custom development. Integrations with a CRM or HR system, single sign-on, custom reports, marketplace commissions, custom gateways. Priced per feature, and the line that most often surprises.

Ask for development estimates per feature, so you can drop or defer the expensive ones. A feature that saves an hour of admin a month is rarely worth a large build in year one.

Maintenance: the cost that keeps the site safe

A LifterLMS site is a live application holding customer data and taking payments. Ongoing work includes:

  • Updating WordPress, LifterLMS, add-ons and the theme, ideally tested on staging first.
  • Backups that are tested, not just scheduled.
  • Security monitoring and quick patching when a vulnerability is announced.
  • Checking that recurring payments, emails and scheduled tasks still run after updates.
  • Fixing the occasional conflict between plugins.

Either someone on your team owns this with a few hours a month, or you pay for a maintenance plan. What you should not do is budget zero. See our LifterLMS support service for what a retained plan covers.

Costs people forget

  • Your own time. Answering student emails, granting access by hand, fixing typos. Automation is worth paying for once this grows.
  • Content updates. Software screenshots and regulations go stale. Budget re-recording.
  • Refunds and chargebacks. Lost revenue plus dispute fees.
  • Tax compliance. Selling digital products across borders can create VAT or sales tax obligations, and possibly an accountant's fee.
  • Migration. Moving off another platform later costs far more than choosing well now. Our migration guide explains why.

Frequently asked questions

Is LifterLMS really free?

The core plugin is free and open source with no limits on courses or students. Paid add-ons are needed for features like Stripe and PayPal payments, groups or advanced quizzes, and the site itself has hosting and running costs.

Does LifterLMS take a percentage of my sales?

No. LifterLMS charges no transaction fee. Your payment gateway charges its normal processing fees.

What happens if I stop paying for LifterLMS add-ons?

LifterLMS says the site and add-ons keep working, but updates, security upgrades and support stop. Running unpatched add-ons on a payment site is a risk, so renew what you use.

Is LifterLMS cheaper than Teachable or Kajabi?

Often over several years, especially as student numbers grow, because there are no per-student or platform transaction fees. It shifts cost into hosting, maintenance and development, so compare full budgets, not plan prices.

What to do next

List the features you need, mark each as core, add-on or custom, and price the add-ons both individually and as a bundle. Then get real quotes for hosting, development and maintenance. That gives you a three-year number you can compare honestly.

If you want a second opinion on your budget, or a fixed scope for the build, our LifterLMS consulting service produces exactly that. Send us your feature list and we will tell you which items cost money and which do not.
